Applications are now being accepted for summer staff positions with the Upward Bound Project at Â鶹ÊÓƵ.

The Upward Bound Summer Project employs six college students as Resident Advisors to supervise, advise and tutor approximately seventy students from Belmont, Franklin, Lincoln, Sotomayor and Wilson High Schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District.

Each Resident Advisor is assigned approximately 12-14 students. The Resident Advisor lives in the residence hall for a total of six weeks. Resident Advisors report directly to the Program Manager and are responsible for the following:

Be willing and able to work on a four-person team as a contributor, leader, and negotiator;

Provide daily residential supervision for student participants throughout the tenure of the program. Complete weekly reports and other related program documents as required;

Develop and implement program activities to promote a sense of community within and outside of the residence hall as a team member and individually responsible for a specific RA group.

Be informed and able to instruct students regarding emergency procedures; assist in and implement crisis management procedures and reports;

Work with all residential staff to ensure that safety and health regulations are vigorously monitored and observed in the residence hall as well as the campus at large;

Be on-call 24 hours per day, six days per week.

Qualifications

Must be currently enrolled in an AA or Bachelor's degree program, completed two years of said program, and be 20 years of age or older. One year of experience working with low-income, first-generation, underrepresented students either as a tutor, teacher's aide, or counselor assistant preferred. Applicant must be in good academic standing, maintain a cum 2.5 GPA and be in good standing at the current institution. One year of experience living and working in a college residential setting is preferred. Bilingual skills are highly desired.

The Upward Bound Summer Project employs five college students as Resident Tutors to provide supplemental instruction in Mathematics, English electives, Science, and Foreign Language to (70) seventy LAUSD high school students.

Each Resident Tutor assists participants as a tutor in Math, English, Science, Foreign Language, and Social Science electives in the Summer Program. The Resident Tutor lives in the residence hall for six weeks and provides tutorial assistance in courses as assigned and daily supervision of all students. Resident Tutors report directly to the Assistant Director for Academic Programming and are responsible for the following.

Assist instructors as classroom aides during the morning and afternoon courses;

Provide individualized assistance during study hall and lab sessions in the afternoon;

Plan and implement workshops and study review sessions in the evenings;

Assist Resident Advisors in the social, cultural, and recreational events; supervise students to ensure safety and well-being.

Qualifications

Must be currently enrolled in an AA or Bachelor's degree program and completed two years of said program, and be 20 years of age or older. A cum GPA of 3.0 or higher is required; transcript required for verification of GPA. Must have completed high school math curriculum through Math Analysis/Trigonometry with a B or higher at each level; must have completed high school English curriculum with a B or higher at each level. Also, one year of experience working with low-income, first-generation, underrepresented students as a tutor, teacher’s aide, or counselor’s assistant, is preferred. One year of experience living and working in a college residential setting is preferred. Bilingual skills are highly desired.

The Upward Bound Summer Project employs two college students as e Night Security Monitors who supervise approximately 70 high school students participating in a 6-week educational program at Â鶹ÊÓƵ during the summer. This position requires overnight hours. The Night Security Monitors ensure student participant safety and Upward Bound regulation compliance through overnight hall monitoring and supervision in an assigned Â鶹ÊÓƵ residence hall.

Job Description

75% Ensure all high school student participants' safety, well-being, and policy compliance during the overnight hours. Responsibilities include nightly room checks, floor monitoring, and emergency crisis response (when applicable).

20% Communicate with the Program Manager at the beginning and end of each shift. In the case of incidents and/or program policy violations, Night Monitors immediately notify the on-call program staff, then complete an incident form.

5% Participation in staff orientation. Other duties as assigned by the Upward Bound Director.

Required Qualifications

  1. Available to work night shifts during the 6-week Summer
  2. Experience working both independently and within a team.
  3. Experience with culturally diverse students
  4. Experience with college residence hall policies and procedures

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Experience with culturally diverse high school students
  2. Experience with conflict resolution
  3. Experience coordinating and supervising group living experiences in a team-focused work environment
  4. Have effective oral and written communication skills
  5. Possess good organizational skills
  6. Must have a high level of maturity; be self-disciplined, and be able to work on a team
  7. Familiarity with college residence hall policies and procedures
  8. Valid driver's license
