A federal law requires higher education institutions to advise the community where information related to sex offenders can be obtained.

The federal went into effect in 2002. The law requires institutions of higher education to issue a statement advising the campus community where law enforcement agency information provided by a state concerning registered sex offenders may be obtained. It also specifies offenders already required to register in a state to provide notice to each institution of higher education in that state at which the person is employed, carries on a vocation, or is a student.

In the State of California, convicted sex offenders must register with their local law enforcement agencies. allows the public to access the registry. It also authorizes local law enforcement to notify the public about high-risk and serious sex offenders who reside in, are employed in, or frequent the community.

Locally, the sex offender registry may be accessed for free at the Los Angeles Police Department, Northeast Station, 3353 San Fernando Road, Los Angeles.
