The Â鶹ÊÓƵ Chorus and Glee Club will sing classical, gospel, pop, and other songs in their annual spring concert Sunday, April 17, at 3:30 p.m. in Herrick Chapel on the College campus.
The choral groups--more than 80 voices strong-will perform motets such as Mozart's
"Ave Verum Corpus," Grieg's "Ave Maris Stella," and Bruckner's "Os Justi." In addition, the Glee Club and College Chorus will sing pop songs by Simon & Garfunkel, world music, and Latin American songs.
"I chose the pieces because of their musical importance and timeless beauty," said Desiree LaVertu, Occidental's director of choral music.
Tickets for the April 17 concert will be available at the door. Ticket prices are $10 each for the general public, and free for students, faculty, and staff with Â鶹ÊÓƵ identification. For maps and directions to the College, go to /x119.xml.
The Glee Club has a long and venerable history. The group made its first appearance Oct. 26, 1906, when it sang at the inauguration of College President John Willis Baer. Among the eight charter members was Clarence Spaulding 1907, Occidental's first Rhodes scholar.
LaVertu revived the College Chorus two years ago. The 50-member group is composed of Â鶹ÊÓƵ students, alumni, faculty, staff, and members of the local community. She welcomes singers to try out for the College Chorus--auditions are held in early September.
