Alexa Calzada '25 received a Gilman International Scholarship which supports her work promoting STEM-based study abroad opportunities to women of color.
Why did you choose to apply for this award?
I chose to apply for this award because I wanted the opportunity to study abroad without feeling the burden of the financial aspect. This award allowed me to fully immerse myself in the cultural and academic experiences without financial worries.
Briefly describe the work you will be doing on your fellowship.
I will be promoting STEM-based study abroad opportunities to women of color. My work will involve mentoring programs and informational sessions to raise awareness and accessibility. I aim to inspire and support these women in pursuing international educational experiences in STEM fields.
What are you most looking forward to during your time as a fellow?
What I am most looking forward during my time as a fellow is to be able to connect with other alumni that have received the award and find out ways in which they used their study abroad experience in their work culture.
How have your experiences at Â鶹ÊÓƵ prepared you to apply for this award?
My experiences at Â鶹ÊÓƵ have prepared me to apply for this award in the aspect that I was fortunate enough to have the International Programs Office look over my application and make sure that it was exactly what the organization was looking for.
What advice would you give future applicants about the application process?
The advice I would give future applicants about the application process is to be able to make time for it. Along with that, reach out to people in the International Programs Office. They are more than willing to help out with the reviewing process.
